*** India to Regulate Online News and Social Media Sites ***

India’s government has issued an order bringing the regulation of online 
news portals and content providers such as Netflix under the authority 
of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting. Social media platforms 
such as Facebook, Twitter and Instagram will also come under the 
ministry, as will audio-visual content on online platforms.

*** Surveillance Disclosures Show Urgent Need for Reforms to EU Aid 
Programs ***

Privacy International and other campaigners are demanding that the EU 
enact urgent reforms to development aid and cooperation programs after 
disclosures reveal their extensive use to train and equip security 
forces with surveillance techniques. It comes following the public 
release of hundreds of documents obtained by PI after a year of 
negotiating with EU bodies under access to documents laws, which show.

*** Hong Kong’s Pro-Democracy Lawmakers to Resign en Masse ***

Hong Kong’s pro-democracy lawmakers announced Wednesday they would 
resign en masse after four of them were ousted from the semi-autonomous 
Chinese territory’s Legislature in a move one legislator said could 
sound the “death knell” for democracy there.

***  Rise of Online Censorship and Surveillance in Myanmar ***

A new report identifies and analyzes the various surveillance and 
censorship tactics currently in use by the authorities in Myanmar in an 
effort to shine a light into this otherwise opaque system. The research 
study’s review of official documents indicated that the Myanmar 
government finances surveillance technologies. A leaked document from 
2019 revealed that the Ministry of Transport and Communications 
allocated approximately $4 million USD to implement a Lawful 
Interception System in order to monitor voice and traffic data within 
the country. These funds came in addition to the approximately $4.6 
million USD that the government spent in 2017 to create a Social Media 
Monitoring Team to track events and monitor online activity.

*** Africa’s New Normal: Shutdowns, Throttling and Stifling Dissent 
Online ***

In the last four months, full or partial internet blackouts occurred in 
five African countries: Algeria, Ethiopia, Guinea, Sudan, and Tanzania. 
The Nigerian government is currently considering legislation to clamp 
down on social media. This has become part of Africa’s new normal.

*** Digital Tools Used by Governments to Target their Citizens Abroad 
***

Check out Citizen Lab’s annotated biography on tools used for

*** The Wayback Machine Is Adding Fact-Checking Labels ***

Wayback Machine  boasts more than 20 years of web history across nearly 
500 billion web pages, audio recordings, videos, and images. It is 
adding fact-checking labels after noticing that several fact-checking 
organizations referenced archived pages in their collection.

*** Opportunity with the DRL/GP Internet Freedom Team ***

The Public International Lawe and Policy Group is seeking a technology 
partner to develop a new, or refine an existing information management 
and analysis solution for three organizations involved in documenting 
human rights abuses in three different contexts, as part of a project 
funded by the Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights and Labor (DRL) at the 
U.S. Department of State. The deadline is November 30th, 2020.

*** Exposing the Invisible: Deadline for Applications Extended ***

Calling all researchers. Apply for Tactical Tech’s three-week online 
workshop where you will work with civil society investigators across the 
EU to enhance and share skills and techniques for secure investigations 
and digital research methods. The worksop will take place from 
January-February 2021. Deadline is December 11.

*** Internews Is Seeking Volunteers to Help Improve Lookylo, an Open 
Source Security Tool ***

Lookyloo is a web interface that lets you view the anatomy of 
connections within a webpage. Internews is looking for volunteers that 
desire to participate in a user test of Lookyloo, which will take 
approximately 40 minutes. They especially seek volunteers who work as a 
journalist, legal professional, site administrator, forensic 
investigator or teach web development.
