We feel so lucky to work with you all on a daily basis. The digital rights
community’s strength, compassion and energy continues on, and your magic
and love this year helped many of us continue on despite the many
challenges we were all facing. We hope 2021 brings you joy, love and
happiness. You all deserve this and so much more for the beauty and
goodness you create in the world.


≈≈≈ News from us: Community is Everything ≈≈≈

2020 has brought so many challenges to so many people, impacting lives
everywhere. Yet even before the pandemic struck, our team had been looking
into better ways to serve you and bring to fruition existing and new ideas
of how to best meet the needs of the community. We are announcing a new
entity that will become the umbrella for our collective work: Team
CommUNITY!

This does mean that the Internet Freedom Festival will not take place in
2021. The consequences of COVID-19 are too grave and the new realities of
travel and in-person gatherings are still to be determined.

≈≈≈ The EU’s Digital Markets Act: the Digital Service Act and the Digital
Markets Act

After lengthy consultations and many rumors and leaks, the European
Commission has released its public draft of the Digital Markets Act (DMA),
which, along with the Digital Services Act (DSA,) represents the first
major overhaul of EU Internet legislation in the 21st Century. Like the
DSA, the DMA takes aim at the monopolisation of the tech sector and
proposes sweeping pro-competition regulations with serious penalties for
noncompliance.

≈≈≈

For many, the decision to put a local representative in Turkey signals that
more arbitrary censorship in a hostile environment where authorities remove
content, may be coming.

≈≈≈The Internet as Battleground in Thailand’s COVID-19 Tinderbox Moment ≈≈≈

Online tools have been invaluable for Thailand’s pro-democracy movement –
but the government is cracking down. Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha is
responding to large-scale student and youth-led pro-democracy protests with
repressive internet restrictions. To maintain internet freedom and sustain
the pro-democracy movement in Thailand, service providers and content hosts
must resist restrictions and civil society must creatively circumvent them.

Growing global technology tensions have led Huawei to make a bet on Russia.
This strategy—while largely driven by Huawei being pushed out of the
West—is also catalyzed by Chinese and Russian government support for
bilateral science and technological (S&T) cooperation.

≈≈≈ In Bihar, Four in Five Women Have Never Used the Internet ≈≈≈


Data from India’s National Family Health Survey reveals the extent of the
digital divide in the country. For the first time ever, a government survey
in India asked its people if they have ever used the internet. Bihar
reported the lowest percentage of women who said they had (20.6%).

≈≈≈ Kazakhstan Ramps Up Control of the Internet Ahead of Elections ≈≈≈



The launch of new online security measures in Kazakhstan is raising fears
among opposition and digital rights groups. Recent changes would make the
government the certificate authority for websites, meaning they can control
what stands between an internet user and the services they can access.

Ask almost anyone what the top global story was for 2020, and they will
likely start with the COVID-19 pandemic. But there is much more to this
story.  2020 will also be remembered as the year that security events
exploded and cyber incidents transformed society in numerous ways.

The Ayeta digital rights toolkit is designed to prepare civil society
actors for when their work puts them in harm's way. It uses gamification as
an opportunity to lower the learning curve. Currently, its available in
English, French and Swahili.

≈≈≈ New Citizen Lab Report: The Great iPwn ≈≈≈

In July and August 2020, government operatives used NSO Group’s Pegasus
spyware to hack 36 personal phones belonging to journalists, producers,
anchors, and executives at Al Jazeera. The personal phone of a journalist
at London-based Al Araby TV was also hacked.

≈≈≈ Open Call for Partnership for Working with Tactical Tech on its Youth
Initiative ≈≈≈



Tactical Tech is looking for partners to work with their youth initiative,
which they are planning to expand into Africa, Latin America, the Middle
East, Europe and Asia. The intiative focuses on creating learning
resources, workshops and exhibitions that enable young people, parents and
educators to better understand digital technologies. Make sure  to apply
before January 7th!

≈≈≈  The Totem Project Offers a full Online Curricula in Spanish ≈≈≈



The Totem Project has released seven courses in Spanish on their online
learning platform. The courses have been tailored to the Central-American
context with relevant examples from and privacy tools recommended for that
region. They include topics like protection of phishing and your privacy,
how the internet works or secure messaging apps.

≈≈≈  Article 19 Estrena “Altavoces”, el Nuevo Podcast en Español ≈≈≈

Este nuevo podcast de Article 19 trata el discurso de odio y la libertad de
expresión en España. En este país, el código penal tipifica como discurso
de odio expresiones que no lo son según los estándares internacional de los
Derechos Humanos, así que alguien puede acabar en la cárcel, por ejemplo,
por un tuit.
