*** Arzu Geybulla Needs Your Support Now! ***

Many of you have come to know and love community member Arzu Geybulla. Arzu
was an IFF fellow, and has been one of the most supportive and
knowledgeable colleagues throughout the years. Now, she needs us to support
her!

Various organizations have been participating in a support campaign for
Arzu, who is being harassed in retaliation for being an amazing journalist
who speaks truth to power with bravery and insight. Specifically, the
harassment is in retaliation for an opinion piece she published on AzLogos,
a platform managed by Azerbaijanis living abroad.

*** Huawei Worked on Facial Recognition System to Surveil Uighurs ***


Huawei worked on a facial recognition system to monitor and track China’s
Uighur minority, according to a new report from video surveillance
researchers at IPVM. The report draws on documents posted publicly to
Huawei’s website, obtained via Google search. The facial recognition
project appears to have been a demonstration of how Huawei hardware could
be used to employ partner algorithms from a Chinese vendor called Megvii.

*** New Rules for WhatsApp and other Messages in South Africa Set to Be
Signed into Law ***

The South African parliament has officially passed the Cybercrimes Bill
which imposes obligations on electronic communications service providers
and financial institutions to assist in the investigation of cyber crimes.
It also provides that the executive may enter into agreements with foreign
states to promote cyber security. One of the key sections of the bill deals
with ‘malicious communications’ and punishments for sending certain types
of messages electronically in South Africa.

*** New Report by Astraea on Liberation Technology ***

In partnership with Research Action Design (RAD), the Astraea Lesbian
Foundation for Jutsice has published a new report, “Technologies for
Liberation: Toward Abolitionist Futures.” The report has emerged out of the
need to better understand the ways in which Queer, Trans, Two-Spirit,
Black, Indigenous, and People of Color communities are disproportionately
impacted by surveillance and criminalization at all levels, and how to
resource these communities to push back.

*** Citizen Lab Uncovers the Clients of Circle, Cyberespionage Firm
Affiliated to NSO Group ***

Circles is a surveillance firm that reportedly exploits weaknesses in the
global mobile phone system to snoop on calls, texts, and the location of
phones around the globe. Circles is affiliated with NSO Group, which
develops the oft-abused Pegasus spyware.

*** CovidLeaks Is the new Whistleblowing Project to Collect Open Data about
the COVID-19 Pandemic ***

The Luca Coscioni Association for the Freedom of Scientific research has
launched CovidLeaks, a whistleblowing project to collect raw and Open Data
about the COVID-19 pandemic. The platform is based on

***New Campaign on Disinfo and Freedom of Expression for Youth in Ireland
***

Article19’s most recent campaign is focused on bringing knowledge on
disinformation and Freedom of Expression into the public sphere in Ireland.
Specifically, they would like to empower 18-25 years olds to make their
voice heard in relation to the Online Safety and Regulation Bill that is
currently being debated in Ireland. The Bill is intended to set up a
regulatory body (“the Media and Online Safety Commission”) that would
oversee and provide strict guidance to social media companies on the
regulation of content on their platforms, and will also include measures
related to online safety of users. In this context, the campaign will also
support our ongoing work to establish a Social Media Council in Ireland.

*** New Report on Information Ecosystem in Port-au-Prince, Haiti ***

Panos Caribbean and Internews recently published a study on Port-Au-Prince
attempting to answer questions related to access to information, tools
used, information sharing and needs, and analyzing what information is
trusted or not.  The area has a population of 2.78 million people.
