*** Remembering Josefin Ekermann ***

Civil Rights Defenders published a piece this week sharing their grief
and sorrow after the tragic death of their colleague Josefin Ekermann,
who was a passenger on the Ethiopian Airlines flight that crashed this
past Sunday. It goes without saying, that our hearts go out to CRD folk
and those that knew her. Josefin coordinated some of the first self-care
workshops ever offered at the IFF, and was loved and respected for her
commitment to human rights defenders.

*** Venezuelan Journalist & Digital Rights Activist Luis Carlos Díaz
Charged  ***

On the night of 12 March 2019, recognized Venezuelan journalist, human
rights defender, and digital rights activist, Luis Carlos Díaz, was
detained.  He is currently facing charges of  “public instigation”
(“instigación pública”), must remain in Venezuela, and is required to
present himself at the court every 8 days. He has also been forbidden
from speaking about his experience in detention.

Various organizations, including Front Line Defenders, the Committee to
Protect Journalists, and the National Syndicate of Newspaper Workers of
Venezuela, have expressed concern about the arbitrary detention of Luis
Carlos Díaz which is perceived to be a reprisal for his human rights
work. This also includes threats of detention against his wife and well
known human rights defender, Naky Soto, who is currently battling cancer.

sessions lead by psychologists? That we have a three part Liberation
Series? Or that Internet Freedom Festival Radio will be broadcasting
live throughout the week? Navigating the IFF can be incredibly hard to
do, especially if this is the first time you will be attending. To help
make it easier, we are updating our wiki on a regular basis that will

*** Celebrate IFF 5th Anniversary***

This year is IFF’s fifth birthday and we need your help to celebrate,
because IFF is about YOU, the people that make up the IFF, that have
worked passionately to cultivate solidarity and resilience in our space.
Send us any pictures, that can be shared publicly, that illustrate what
IFF means to you and how you feel about the IFF community. They will be
posted on Instagram (@the_internetff) using the official hashtag #IFF5.
