***Innovation Challenge 2019: CRD invites you to share your ideas!***
The Civil Rights Defenders has just announced the opening of the
Innovation Challenge 2019. If you have any idea that addresses important
issues facing Human Rights Defenders, you could receive up to 300,000
Swedish crowns in funding.

***Spying on a Budget: Inside a Phishing Operation with Targets in the
Tibetan Community***
A recent report by Citizen Lab analyzed an extensive phishing operation
with targets in the Tibetan community. They found that while the
operation was simplistic and inexpensive, it achieved success. It also
showed how low adoption rates for digital security features, such as two
factor authentication, contribute to the low bar to entry for digital
espionage through basic phishing.

IFF alumni, Melanio Escobar from RedesAyuda, shares his recent piece for
Vice Colombia. He explains how in Venezuela, social networks have become
the new targets of insecurity. Venezuelans, similar to Cubans, depend on
money sent from relatives abroad. In this new paradigm, selling dollars
on social networks has become routine. However, it presents a new
opportunity for cyber criminals.
