***Fundraisers for Ali & Peter #Istanbul10***
Please consider contributing to the online fundraiser being organized to
with the legal costs incurred by the families of Ali Gharavi and Peter
Steudtner. If you happen to be in Amsterdam on August 26, there will be
an in-person fundraiser from 7:00pm to 11:00pm at: Veemkade 576, 1019 BL
Ali’s mother and wife will be in attendance.

***Internet shutdowns in Africa are on the rise and stifling Press
Freedom***
''Internet shutdowns are on the rise. In 2016, the #KeepItOn campaign
documented 56 shutdowns worldwide, including in six African nations.''
This is up from 15 documented shutdowns in 2015, according to the same data.

***Remembering Bassel***
To commemorate Bassel, several initiatives have been established in the
last month. To start, the Bassel Khartabil Free Culture Fellowship was
launched to support outstanding individuals developing the culture of
their communities in adverse circumstances:

In addition, a new collaborative music project by Disquiet Juno has been
established in tribute to Bassel. Individuals are asked to submit music

***Venezuela's new chief prosecutor vows to jail protest leaders***
"Venezuela will hunt down and jail leaders of violent protests that have
rocked the country since April, its new top prosecutor said on Thursday,
a day before a hate crimes law was expected to be approved despite fears
that it will be used to crush dissent."
