Dear friends,

After a brief pause in our weekly community updates, we’re finally back.
As we are resuming these emails, we encourage you to send us your
general updates, upcoming events and job openings to be featured in the
next edition.

But now, here's the IFF Weekly update for April 17 – 21:

*### News and Updates ###*

*** IFF 2017 Feedback ***

Thank you all for sharing your extremely valuable feedback. We want to
keep evolving the IFF with you. Haven’t sent anything yet? No worries,
you can still send it to us :)

*** “The reality is very dark”: ongoing censorship and crackdowns
against journalists in Sudan ***

In past years, the human rights situation in Sudan has oscillated from
bad to worse. A member of one of Sudan’s youth movements told the
African Centre for Justice and Peace Studies in 2014 that even if the
restrictions on the press were lifted, the reality is very dark.
Activists, journalists, civil society members and human rights defenders
continue to be subjected to arbitrary arrest and detention, harassment
and intimidation, and criminal charges. Non-governmental organisations
not affiliated with the ruling party are under constant threat of
closure. Media houses (including media traditionally seen as being
pro-government) are consistently subjected to pre- and post-publication
censorship.

For the African Centre for Justice and Peace Studies: Mossaad Mohamed
Ali/ Emily Cody: +256 779584542/ +256 788695068 (Kampala), e-mail at

For the Association for Progressive Communications: Sekoetlane Phamodi
and Shawna Finnegan e-mail at shawna at apc.org

*** The IFF is Evolving ***

The IFF team is evolving in preparation for 2018. The ever-lovely Nick
Sera-Leyva has left the festival and is moving to different roles in the
Internet Freedom space. As you all know, Nick did a phenomenal job
during the last IFF. This also means he is available for any great
adventures you may have waiting for him!
