*Iran Cyber Stewards Program* - Deadline: June 23rd, by ASL19
We are running our second round for our Iran Cyber Stewards Program. The
program is designed to support initiatives that improve access to
digital rights and directly contributes to civil society issues in Iran.
This is a year-long program that will support 3-5 individuals by
providing mentorship, a small grant, access to networks and resources,
and financial support to attend two events. This program was inspired by
Citizen lab’s Cyber Steward program, although it operates independently
of The Lab.
For more information, please visit the website:
https://asl19.org/en/cyberstewards/. Deadline to apply is: June 23, 2016
@ 11:59pm PT.

*New Holistic Security Manual, by Tactical Tech*
This manual is the first to adopt an explicitly 'holistic' approach to
security and protection strategies for human rights defenders. This
means that rather than looking separately at the importance of our
digital security, psycho-social well-being and organisational security
processes, it attempts to integrate them and highlight their
interrelatedness.

*DRL Just Released Two New Internet Freedom Solicitations*
The first is DRL’s Internet Freedom Annual Program Statement (APS),
which requests applications for technology development, digital
security, policy advocacy, and research programs. Similar to last year,
there are two deadlines to submit statements of interest to the APS –
August 26, 2016 and February 10, 2017. Applicants can submit up to two
statements of interest per deadline. The full APS is available at
http://www.state.gov/j/drl/p/258418.htm.
The second solicitation requests applications for long-term, core
support for proven anti-censorship technologies. The deadline to submit
full proposals to this solicitation is August 26, 2016. The full
solicitation is available at http://www.state.gov/j/drl/p/258417.htm.
If you have any questions about the application process, please contact
InternetFreedom at state.gov.
*New Copyright Law in the European Union, by OpenMedia*
In the EU there is a proposal to extend copyright rules to hyperlinks
and the snippet of text that accompany them -- giving press publishers
the right to charge fees to websites that share them. It’s currently
called a ‘neighbouring right’ or ‘ancillary copyright’, but it’s
essentially a link tax. OpenMedia <www.openmedia.org> are working with
the Save the Link network of over 100 groups to push back against this
new hyperlinking fee.
If publishers gain a neighbouring right over links it would severely
harm access to information. It will interfere with open access,
electronic library resources and Creative Commons: movements which
enable Internet users across the world to access knowledge for free.
Smaller search engines and aggregators, unable to afford to pay the fees
will shut down; some search engines may chose to only link to the
biggest news companies, and as a result small publishers will lose
traffic and close up shop.
The Commission have just closed their public consultation on this issue.
Through our campaign 37,000 people said they were against a new
neighbouring right for publishers. We’ll soon be asking people to write
to their MEP to share our briefing and the public response, so please
sign up to the save the link campaign to stay up to date. Further
