Dear UvA colleagues,

I would like to invite you to join a seminar with Gabriele Wadlig (TU Dresden) on 10 February 2026, 12:00-13:00 at the VU Amsterdam in room Novum 2 on the second floor of the New Building<https://share.google/BJgf3XKDDACNyefY9>.

Gabriele will present her draft paper entitled “Destination Earth, Digital Twins and the Platformization of Planetary Governance”.

This article examines how the European Commission’s Destination Earth (DestinE) initiative mobilizes EU legal-administrative instruments to bring into being and steer the DestinE System—a layered platform infrastructure for a digital twin of the Earth—thereby configuring planetary governance as what the article terms planetary platform governance. It argues that the platformization of a digital twin of the Earth materializes a distinctively European modality of anticipatory algorithmic governance in which consequential rule-setting is relocated upstream into the DestinE System’s legal-technical architecture. Reading DestinE as a planetary “greening of empire,” the article concludes that the platformization of a digital twin of the Earth renders promises of planetary stewardship and democratized prediction compatible with and, indeed, dependent on the consolidation of European infrastructural power and epistemic authority over planetary futures.

You can read the paper here:
Destination Earth, Digital Twins and the Platformization of Planetary Governance by Gabriele Wadlig :: SSRN<https://papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cfm?abstract_id=5909423>

I hope that it would be of interest to colleagues interested in EU law, law and technology as well as the theoretical questions underpinning algorithmic governance.

Please let me know if you can join us.

Best wishes,

Pola
