Hello everyone!
Sorry for the delay with this, as some of you may know things in Chile are
unstable to say the least, because of street demonstrations and the
consequent excessive repression by law enforcement, so people here are
locked in their homes or out in the streets, if you need more information
about this let us know, but for the moment (in a self care move) talking
about happier topics we want to update you regarding our first meeting,
which happened before the recent events I described before.
First, given that Coffee & Circumvention is super awkward translated to
Spanish, we ended calling it "Hablemos de internet" (Lets talk about
internet) so we can have a little extra flexibility with the topics in the
future and is catchy.
Because of logistic issues we could make the call for the first meeting
like 4 days before D day, Cony (Constanza) made a beautiful flyer, we had
an attendance of 8 people counting Cony and myself, some of the people are
environment and land activists so the topics around surveillance and ways
to organize local communities were the most concurrent, also some brief
other talks were about:
- Facial recognition
- Phone surveillance
- Insecure apps
- Memes
- Legal considerations about social network monitoring
- Intellectual property
We had one IFF CEP Fellow with us and he wants to help in future meetings
:). Also we mapped some future topics to include in the next months, but we
also need to adapt to the ongoing situation. If everything is better by Nov
21 to meet, we hope we can talk about what is happening, what we can do and
how we can protect ourselves in this harsh context.
Fingers crossed for the situation here to improve and thank you for giving
us your experience with your meetings in September.
The best,
Carlos
