Dear all,
Hope this finds everyone very well. As a new entry here, I thought I’d introduce myself and just say, it is a great pleasure to be part of this group!
My name is Silvia Masiero and I lecture in international development at Loughborough University, which is in the heart of the British East Midlands (a lovely place for hikes!) I research information technologies in socio-economic development and work primarily on anti-poverty programmes, meaning social welfare schemes designed specifically for the poor. I have a regional focus on India, but a broader interest in anti-poverty policy and its intertwinings with digitalisation and datafication.
Thanks to Stefania, Emiliano and Lara, a synopsis of my research is now available on the Datactive blog, as a post titled India’s Aadhaar: The datafication of anti-poverty programmes and its implications. The post draws reflections from my ongoing research of India’s incorporation of Aadhaar, the largest biometric database worldwide, in the national food security system, which has multiple implications on programme architecture and especially on the entitlements of beneficiaries. The post is available at https://data-activism.net/2018/09/bigdatasur-indias-aadhaar-the-datafication-of-anti-poverty-programmes-in-india-and-its-implications/, and I would be delighted to discuss these themes in the BigDataSur intellectual home!
Looking forward to great conversations online and in person, all the best,
Silvia
