Querid at s amig at s, dear friends

the adventure of the ‘big data from the south’ blog continues!

Last week we published the first episode of the series ‘ Imagining good data’, by Anna Carlson. See https://data-activism.net/2018/05/bigdatasur-blog-13-imagining-good-data-northern-utopias-southern-lessons/

The second episode goes online tomorrow. Here is a teaser:

In this second of three blog posts on the challenges of imagining 'good data' globally, Anna Carlson considers a particular strand of technology-driven utopianism in the Global North: the idea of radically decentralised data. She writes that its latest instantiations – exemplified by blockchain – tend to forget the dire and unequally distributed ecological impact of digital technologies.

Anna is a member of the Good Data project (@Good__Data), an interdisciplinary research initiative funded by Queensland University of Technology Faculty of Law, which is located in unceded Meanjin, Turrbal and Jagera Land (also known as Brisbane, Australia)— so let us draw your attention to this amazing initiative. The Good Data Project examines ‘good’ and ‘ethical’ data practices with a view to developing policy recommendations and software design standards for programs and services that embody good data practices, in order to start conceptualising and implementing a more positive and ethical vision of the digital society and economy. A book titled ‘Good Data’ will be released in late 2018.

Please keep your blog posts coming! Remember that any language and register (activist, practitioner, academic, you name it!) is welcome.
