Hello Session Designers,

Along with working on improving facilitation skills at MozFest and RightsCon, one of my other major projects has been helping to edit and design IFRC’s Data Playbook V1 which has just been launched here: https://solferinoacademy.com/data-playbook/ <https://solferinoacademy.com/data-playbook/>

Even if you aren’t involved in data literacy efforts, you might be interested in the content specifically designed to support group/team learning. We’ve been trying to drive home that “Data is a Team Sport”. The social learning content is designed for teams to have discussions and activities across the data lifecycle in short 30-minute to 1-hour sessions. We’ve divided the content into 10 Modules with “recipes” to support facilitators in achieving learning goals. Each of the 120 exercises guides facilitators in prep, sequencing and the amount of time needed to run. We’ve also included an intro chapter with “Facilitator Tips”. There are also some handy ‘curriculum templates’.

Many of you are intensely interested in user-centred design and co-creation methodologies. I worked with Heather Leson at IFRC to launch the beta version in 2018, learned from how people used that and then set out at the beginning of 2021 to edit and co-create the V1 with the vast Red Cross/Red Crescent Network. Melissa El Hamouch from 510 -Netherlands Red Cross joined us as co-editors. We ran a series of sprints where we engaged 270 contributors in creating 10 Modules with 120 exercises, games, scenarios, slides and checklists. Throughout the sprints, we refined our process to get and provide value to the participants.

Let us know if you are interested in learning more about the co-creation process. I’d be happy to run a special session to share expertise. But also, if you have any questions in general, feel free to ask via email.

Thanks,

Dirk
