What I’ve appreciated about being involved with the Rise Against Big Tech coalition is that the focus isn’t just on listing alternative tools. It’s about opening up a deeper dialogue on what it really means to move away from dominant platforms—how that shift affects justice, community and the people most at risk.

In the “Strengthening Online Communities” online workshop on Wednesday, July 29th from 3:00–4:30 pm UTC, we’ll explore how to design digital spaces that balance different community cultures while aligning with RABT values of collaboration, transparency and community control. We’ll look at the real‑world challenges of moving communities off Big Tech, the opportunities open‑source and values‑aligned tools offer, and the trade‑offs involved.

We’re at a moment where we want to nurture the community growing around this movement, and we’re recognising that the community itself already holds a wealth of experience. It feels like the right time to convene a workshop to talk honestly about the challenges and capture lessons from groups who’ve tried to move off Big Tech.

Big Tech tools make it easy to start a group, but hard to build a community that controls its own future and remembers what it has already learned. Different technologies have created different cultures: mailing lists support slower, reflective exchanges; forums like Discourse organise conversations so they become shared reference; real‑time chat tools create fast, intimate spaces where insights can quickly disappear.
