AI ... and non-English languages. A view from India (Anivar Aravind)
There's a race on around larger and larger language models without looking
at the core linguistic issues this presents. Generative AI is based on
next-word or context prediction which is primarily built around English.
Other languages are facing issues of data scarcity, data droughts and other
issues, says Anivar Aravind, a techie I've known from the Free Software
world for ages now. Morphological script complexities around languages,
such as Hindi, etc. All these issues are there. Bigger issues are also
around the absence of proper technology and academic research around the
languages.  Much of this depends on FOSS (Free/Libre and Open Source
