The I4C South Asia Hub is arranging a panel discussion with regional experts on the BRI (Belt and Road Initiatives) in South Asia Opportunities and Challenges: Under the People's Republic of China (PRC)'s Belt & Road Initiative (BRI), South Asia has been one of the largest recipients of investments in infrastructure, ICT, energy, manufacturing, agriculture etc. With Sri Lankan economy defaulting and concerns of 'Chinese debt trap' policies looming larger than ever before in the South Asian region, there is a need for understanding the degree of PRC's impact under the BRI investments, especially for the vulnerable South Asian economies as well as civic space movements.

SPEAKERS DETAILS

Rezaur Rahman Lenin is an academic activist based in Dhaka, Bangladesh, and is the founding member of the human rights organisation, Committee for the Protection of Fundamental Rights (Moulik Odhikar Suraksha Committee.He defends political detainees and trade union activists on a pro bono basis and has represented families of victims of enforced disappearances and extrajudicial killings under the Digital Security Act. He has written extensively for Amnesty International, the Human Rights Watch and the Committee to Protect Journalists.

Adnan Amir is a journalist, editor, researcher, and trainer based in Pakistan. His writings cover conflict, economy, politics, international affairs, and governance and have been published in Financial Times, Nikkie Asian Review, South China Morning Post, Asia Times, China-US Focus, Business Standard, among others. He has extensively covered the Belt and Road Initiative and its Pakistan component China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) as a journalist and researcher.

Myrna L. Sulochana Ramiah Mohan is an independent award-winning journalist based in Sri Lanka and currently the Deputy Editor of Ceylon Today. She extensively writes and focuses on international relations, maritime security, China relations and the BRI,  migration and displacement, international maritime security, the geopolitics of the Asian region, human rights, trade and business, the environment, climate change, politics, policy and social justice.

Samik Kharel is a freelance journalist contributing for various national and international outlets and is based in Kathmandu, Nepal.  He is actively involved with digital human rights, access, equality, internet culture, and BRI's implications forNepal.

Anam Fatima works as Research Fellow at Bytes for All, Pakistan. She is a Mentor Education Youth Ambassador (EYA) at Idara-e-Talem-o-Agahi (ITA) where she has contributed to the development and delivery of a high-quality program that has at its center a commitment to ensure that poor women and men benefit equally from development efforts.

Remshay Ahmed is the Communications and Advocacy Officer at I4C SA Hub, and is based in Pakistan. With a background in journalism; print and broadcasting, Remshay's work focuses on geo-politics, foreign policy, human rights, Afghanistan Crisis, and Disinformation. She previously worked as a China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) Research Associate for China's Embassy in Pakistan, however, switched gears towards advocacy work as the indigenous movement against CPEC 'Gwadar Ko Haq Do' began in late 2021.
