Critical Internet Safeguard Needs to Raise Funds to Stay in BusinessA critical
internet safeguard isseeking funds to help it survive as an independent
organization,Wired reports. For more than 15 years, Shadowserver has been funded
by Cisco, but it is about to start life as a community-funded alliance: it needs
to raise $400,000 to survive the transition, and then $1.7 million more to get
through 2020. Shadowserver scans more than 4 billion IP addresses every day and
puts together activity reports based on the findings for more than 4,600 network
operators, as well as the national computer security incident response teams of
107 countries. It also hosts a repository of 1.2 billion malware samples. It
hosts more than 11.6 petabytes of threat intelligence and malware-related data.
It also actively works to contain incidents, through "honeypot" and "sinkholing”
infrastructure, which lures attackers and records details about them, and
diverts malicious traffic into a digital black hole. Shadowserver says it
“sinkholes” up to five million IP addresses per day, neutralizing malicious
firehoses of data. It also runs a "registrar of last resort," which takes
control of malicious domain names to disrupt criminal infrastructure, and
collaborates with law enforcement groups all over the world.
