the *Associated Press *reports. Ayatollah Ali Khamenei offered cautious
support to the government’s price hike by saying he wasn’t an “expert” on
the issue, but strongly criticized the protestors, calling them “thugs,”
who had been pushed into violence by counterrevolutionaries and foreign
enemies of Iran. He ordered security forces “to implement their tasks” and
told Iran’s citizens to keep clear of violent demonstrators. Iranian
authorities said at least three people have died in the violence, though
since the government shut down internet access to staunch demonstrations
taking place in a reported 100 cities and towns, it was hard to tell
whether unrest continued. The protests have put renewed pressure on Iran’s
government as it tries to overcome the U.S. sanctions that have hurt the
economy since President Trump unilaterally withdrew America from the
nuclear deal over a year ago. Meanwhile, protesters in Chile have used a
laser to bring down a drone that was monitoring demonstrations

the capital of Santiago, the *Independent* reports. Demonstrators cheered
as beams of light focused on the drone, which veered out of control and
crashed. Three days ago, police warned that using lasers against their
helicopter pilots was a crime because it endangers their safety. The use of
lasers has apparently been imported from Hong Kong, where protestors use
them to blind security forces and fool facial recognition cameras.
