[liberationtech] Facebook & Google Fight Deepfakes

I’m not going to look at my dear mom across the kitchen table and tell her
she’s an idiot, sheep, or puppet, because she’s intimidated by tech and the
seemingly endless privacy and security opinions but uses digital
technologies anyway.

My mom understands that she has a digital identity now. But she will likely
never fully understand what a VPN does. She thought I broke her new TV when
I connected it to the internet, even though she already streams. She
doesn’t understand why she can’t call up music on her Alexa, despite having
a Prime account. All of this is okay. My mom raised six kids, and now has
six grandkids. We’re talking about a perfectly intelligent person here.

“Don’t Be Evil” means working harder to enable people like my dear mom in
Oklahoma to take advantage of these technologies without having to follow
the Liberationtech listserv just to know how to protect herself online
while she’s checking out pics and videos of her family.
