The ongoing trend towards increasing urbanization is evident and already
well-documented. Many scholars criticize concepts of smart cities which
focus on ubiquitous digital automation of infrastructures and services
instead of solving citizens’ problems. These scholars and activists call
for a more political, sociological and anthropological focus on cities,
for discussions about ethics and values in the development of
technologies, and about governance of urban spaces. Most of all, they
call for a bottom-up, open, needs-centered, civil-society-driven
approach to the design and development of smart cities.
Our workshop aims to discuss the current concepts regarding smart cities
and possible directions for future developments. In particular, and in
line with ongoing digitalization and urbanization processes, where
cities and natural spaces are perceived and discussed as increasingly
intertwined, we want to consider a holistic approach to smart cities. In
our discussions, we want to give special attention to important
stakeholders, who don’t currently have a voice in this discussion. Among
these are nature and wildlife, but also other relevant stakeholders e.g.
children, people living with dementia, migrants and refugees.
We invite researchers, designers and practitioners interested in
participating to submit 2-4 page position papers (SigConf format
available at http://www.acm.org/publications/proceedings-template).
Papers should critically reflect on how the authors’ research or
interests address issues related to smart cities. Authors’ prior
experience does not have to be specifically concerned with smart cities,
but the position papers will be expected to demonstrate how their work
is relevant to the workshop’s topic and can be applied within the
workshops’ context.
Location: The 16th European Conference on Computer-Supported Cooperative
Work: The International venue on Practice-centred computing and the

„The art of living means more than just art to live,
is the highest art that life teaches - multifarious.
Rich in wealth and emptiness.
Lightness and seriousness.“
