[liberationtech] To the International Community - End the Lull of Silence on Sudan

We are amidst a deteriorating economic and human rights situation in Sudan
and the Government continues to violate the basic rights to life and
freedoms of association, assembly and expression.



*1.    *The unprecedented rise in the price of goods and services due to
the Government’s failing polices has led to increasing inflation and to the
rapid devaluation of the currency, reaching almost 100% of its value three
months ago. We are currently facing a full-fledged economic crisis which
will lead to a total economic collapse very soon. Against this background,
On January 16th and 17th, people peacefully took to the streets in various
Sudanese cities including in Port Sudan, Sennar, Darfur and Khartoum,
exercising  their right to protest which is guaranteed by the constitution
and international conventions. Following the crackdown by the security
forces and the police, nearly 200 people were arrested and over 100 remain
in detention right now. Reports from those released say that they are being
subjected to torture including flogging and electrocution.



*2.    *The Regime is continuing its policies towards IDPs and the forcible
emptying of IDP camps in Darfur. On January 21, the pro-government militias
launched a barbarian attack on Hasahisa camp on Central Darfur State, which
led to 4 dead and 56 injured and the kidnapping of two children.



*3.    *The Regime has completely ignored the situation of Sudanese victims
of human trafficking and slavery and its hidden support to these gangs,
despite claiming the contrary, by facilitating its work within the Sudanese
territories.



*4.    *The Regime has built an institution of corruption, which infested
across all sectors and level of government, continuing to loot a large part
of the country’s’ resources, and led to the impoverishment and displacement
of a large number of Sudanese people.



*5.    *Despite the Regime’s claims of countering-terrorism, it continues
to support radical Islam in the country allowing radical groups and clerks
to spread their ideologies. The long-lasting ties with the Muslim
Brotherhood impacts on destabilizing the entire region.



It is our view that Sudanese challenges are and should remain in fact
problems that we as Sudanese citizens are responsible in addressing.
However, there is a mandated responsibility to be shared with international
human rights organizations and the International community at large that
has not been sufficiently taken. In the absence of rule of law and the
Government of Sudan’s disrespect to our legitimate right to peacefully
protest, the way in which the country is being dragged into economic abyss
that has left millions struggling to survive; there is more that needs to
be done to advocate for the protection of civilians in this country.



*We call on the international community to take action to put an end to the
shameless disregard of the universality of human rights in Sudan.*
