a recent Tidbits thread (private forum for Apple users) has the following succinct summary of how to securely carry your devices across international borders, in case you are concerned about privacy/securing the data.

I’m not professional in this, but thought it useful, not just for Apple users.

> Depending on how sensitive your data is, you might want to consider storing the important data outside the machine. For example, Get a dropbox account and store the important documents on an encrypted disc image on Dropbox. Before crossing a border checkpoint, unlink your device from Dropbox and delete your local Dropbox folder. Once you’ve crossed the border, get on the Internet and relink your Dropbox account. (you can probably do this with any cloud service, but the only one’s I’ve tried storing encrypted DMG sparse bundles on are iCloud and Dropbox).
