"Authorities" are in many instances not "protectors," but liars and thieves. If you're singled out, bad things may happen.

But still I don't think they were looking for your "data." However, I don't have enough information beyond my own travels and general news about the country (Argentina) to back this.

A recent post in this list talked about an upcoming conference in Cartagena, Colombia, "Big Data from the South." Following that path you may find more informed opinions based on actual research and facts.

Personal data in electronics have become so critical that I it would be handicapping not to travel with it...
