Although I really like OTR and have used it for years, it really shows
its limits in current chat setups: conversations sprawling over several
devices.
   
Most of us agree now that security means getting people to use tools
that fit their usecases AND are secure by default.
The current model for chat most people expect is to start a chat on a
tablet, keep it going on the phone and be also able to answer from a
computer. This is what Hangouts, the default Android chat app does, and
what most people have come to expect.

In practice, with OTR, as soon as you have more than one client
connected to your account, things go down the drain. I know OTRv4 is
supposed to solve that, in practice, it just does not work (I've tried
with several people, in several settings, you always end up with a
confusing situation and lost and/or repeated messages).

One encryption solution that claims to solve several of OTR's issues is
OMEMO. I have no idea how serious the code is, and I doubt it's been
audited at this point, but it was created by the same people who make
Conversations, which is at this point the most advanced XMPP client on
Android in my opinion. (http://conversations.im/omemo/)

Any chances of seeing Tor Messenger incorporate OMEMO?

For that matter, of seing ChatSecure and more desktop/web clients use it
too…

In any case, I'll be sure to give Tor Messenger a go, it looks like a
simpler, more up to date messenger.
