I use an independently built binary from the repository here[0], and 
know others who do the same (or build their own).

I would be more concerned about some undercover NSA employee trying 
to slip a patch with a hard to notice vulnerability in to the code 
than them trying to convince OpenWhisperSystems to distribute dodgy 
binaries - that is quite a very high-risk move politically.
