generally, manipulating data is done for any of the following reasons, and more!
- to eliminate, fabricate, or bend digital records to achieve an end,
such as espionage, blackmail, disruption, CNE, or camouflage.
- to introduce fatal flaws into processing systems, such that loss of
service or data occurs. e.g. financial systems will "halt" if internal
integrity checks fail. this loss of service is sometimes itself the
intent.
- to remove the possibility of accurate attribution or forensic
analysis. similar to first but focused on "getting away clean" after
committing a "cyber crime".
- to prevent a targeted business from remaining a going concern, if
business critical records are lost or corrupted.
others, but these are motivations foremost in mind.
