The Committee to Protect Journalists is seeking to contract with a security-focused Systems Administrator to maintain CPJ's website & associated infrastructure on a long-term basis. This is a freelance opportunity.

Security-conscious Ubuntu or Debian administrators are preferred. We expect the monthly workload to be 5-15 hours, though occasional projects may require more time in some months. It is possible that the scope of this work will expand as CPJ builds out additional infrastructure.

In general, work can be done during business hours, though anything involving a risk of downtime needs to be scheduled after business hours. CPJ operates primarily in the US-Eastern time zone. All the infrastructure is virtual and work will be done remotely. In the event of an urgent security or availability issue, fast responses will be needed after hours.

Initial responsibilities

  *   Maintain a virtual server hosted on Amazon Web Services
  *   Manage a medium-sized website running Apache & Movable Type
  *   Monitor system performance and plan for future capacity and scaling
  *   Deploy site improvements together with CPJ's contract web developer
  *   Ensure that the site has a best-in-class HTTPS configuration
  *   Constantly harden all aspects of the server configuration
  *   Alert CPJ staff about critical security vulnerabilities, recommend/implement action
  *   Manage test & staging environments as needed
  *   Ensure that all materials are safely backed up
  *   Ensure that the site is secure against defacement & denial-of-service
  *   Implement forward-looking security, integrity, and privacy technologies
  *   Monitor system to detect possible intrusions & intrusion attempts
  *   Explain related technical issues to CPJ staff

Required core skills

  *   Expert knowledge of Linux system administration
  *   System, network, and operational hardening
  *   Ubuntu or Debian and their various norms & foibles
  *   Server virtualization
  *   Performance & security monitoring tools & best-practices
  *   Essential scripting & automation
  *   Clear written & verbal communication skills
  *   Additional familiarity

Candidates should either already be familiar with these tools/platforms or be willing to rapidly teach themselves the ins and outs of these systems.

  *   Amazon Web Services
  *   Best-in-class HTTPS implementations
  *   Cloudflare DDoS-protection tools
  *   Apache-management, especially scaling & hardening

Nice-to-have

  *   Movable Type
  *   MySQL
  *   Experience working with journalists or publishers
  *   Git
  *   Track record of contribution to free-software projects

Preferred experience

This experience should represent a substantial fraction of your effort, but may be professional or volunteer.

  *   5 years experience as a Linux sysadmin or devops experience
  *   2 years experience managing Ubuntu or Debian systems
  *   2 years experience managing systems to host websites
