The University of Michigan School of Information <http://si.umich.edu>
(UMSI) seeks organizations in India interested in addressing information,
technology and design needs in partnership with professional graduate
students from the University of Michigan. The mission of the Global
Information Engagement Program <http://umsigiep.sites.uofmhosting.net>
(GIEP) is to develop sustainable information tools to serve social justice
or human development needs in India.
In 2014, small teams of GIEP students worked on several projects in India,
including developing a website of resources for the disabled, creating an
archive and networking platform for human rights lawyers and finding new
solutions for data management in a hospital system.
Student teams bring with them highly developed skills in needs assessment,
application development, product design and a deep understanding of
information management.
Examples of projects on which students may provide assistance:
- creation, advancement, or organization of information repositories and
archives
- development of interactive web-based services
- preservation of collections and information
- development of internal library systems
- research and analysis on information policy topics
- digital design projects
- data analysis and informatics
Requirements for organizations to participate are as follows:
- a well-developed project proposal that clearly highlights an
information challenge
- a committed project leader at the organization to work with students
and provide resources and information to ensure project success
- availability for remote consultation for initial project research and
development from January to May, 2015
- workspace and project guidance for 2-4 students during their time in
India over approximately 6-8 weeks in the summer of 2015
Proposals for projects are welcome from industry, non-profit, governmental
and academic institutions. There is no cost to the organization. Student
expenses are fully funded by the University of Michigan.
*The deadline to propose a project is October 1, 2014.*
The application is available online: umsi.in/giep-proposal
