There's a simpler explanation: a disgruntled AdSense publisher got upset
with something Google may have done and then tried to exact revenge with
this. 

It's easy to imagine click-bombing to be a real thing and click-bombing
trolls can easily generate resentment among users, one of whom could be
motivated to do this.
