Part I: Surveillance, Whistleblowing, and Digital Civil Disobedience
April 17, 2014

This symposium will consist of three panels addressing issues arising out of revelations over the past year of formerly secret surveillance programs being conducted by U.S. government agencies, principally the National Security Agency (NSA). These programs have raised fundamental questions about the place of surveillance in a democratic society. Among the topics to be discussed will be:

Surveillance, the Constitution, and Reciprocal Trust
Whistleblowing, Leaks, and State Secrets in a Transparent Society
Digital Civil Disobedience

Speakers will include Profs. Jeffrey Rosen (GWU Law), Craig Green (Temple Law), Christopher Sprigman (NYU Law and UVA Law), David Kairys (Temple Law), John Raines (Temple University), David Post (Temple Law), and Matt Blaze (University of Pennsylvania); with Alan Butler (EPIC), Shane Harris (Foreign Policy), Siobhan Gorman (the Wall Street Journal), Tor Ekeland (Lead counsel for defendant in US v. Auernheimer), and Andy Greenberg (Forbes).

CLE Credit (4.5 PA Substantive Hours): $15 with advanced registration, $25 day of the event (tickets can be purchased at the Box Office on the main level)

Part II: 1971 Special Preview Screening and Discussion Panel
May 28, 2014
6:00 – 8:30 p.m.

This symposium is also proud to host a special preview screening of the new film 1971<http://www.1971film.com/>, a documentary which tells the story of the 1971 burglary of the FBI office in Media, Pennsylvania which led to the exposure of the domestic FBI spying operation known as COINTELPRO. A discussion panel featuring the filmmaker, members of the Media burglary team, and their attorney, will follow the screening.
