In that case I agree StartPage probably makes sense. Search engines 
are mainly useful for long tail things; for other stuff I generally 
just use Wikipedia as my search engine.

That said what type of results appear on the any search engine is a 
rather political issue, and I don't think there's a good solution 
beyond avoiding the "filter bubble" stuff, except a critical eye.  
The ranking algorithms necessarily obscure some things and show 
others, regardless of whether they've been explicitly designed to 
favour one viewpoint over another - that's just what they do.

Which is why I prefer wikipedia in general.
