SECDEV FLASH NOTE: Syrian Electronic Army goes on the offensive, intensifies targeting of opposition Facebook pages
4 June 2013. As the Assad regime intensifies attacks on opposition-held areas, the pro regime hacking group Syrian Electronic Army (SEA) has escalated its attacks on opposition social media sites. In the past 72 hours, the SEA appears to have launched eleven separate attacks on opposition Facebook pages, a dramatic increase over previous efforts. The targeted pages correlate strikingly with locations currently under intense regime attack.

In the absence of an international media presence, Syrian activists have leveraged Facebook and YouTube to share conflict information with the world. The targeting of these resources indicates that the SEA is focusing its efforts on eliminating news reporting sites in the most active conflict areas, attempting to silence the few remaining sources of information available to outside observers.
