Pronunciation: Brit. /ˌkrɪptə(ʊ)zuːˈɒlədʒi/, /ˌkrɪptə(ʊ)zəʊˈɒlədʒi/, U.S.
/ˌkrɪptəˌzoʊˈɑlədʒi/, /ˌkrɪptəˌzuˈɑlədʒi/
Etymology: < crypto- comb. form + zoology n., after French
*cryptozoologie*(1959 or earlier: see below). Compare earlier
cryptozoological adj.
Use of French *cryptozoologie* earlier than 1959 is sometimes attributed to
B. Heuvelmans, but it has not been found in his published work of the time;
Heuvelmans attributed an independent earlier use to I. T. Sanderson (see
quot. 1968).
The study of unknown, legendary, or extinct animals whose existence or
survival to the present day is disputed or unsubstantiated.
1968 R. Garnett tr. B. Heuvelmans *In Wake of Sea-serpents* xiii. 508 When
he [*sc.* Ivan T. Sanderson] was still a student he invented the word
‘cryptozoology’, or the science of hidden animals, which I was to coin much
later, quite unaware that he had already done so.
1980 *Monitor (McAllen, Texas)* 15 Oct. 1a/4 James Powell, Jr.,..said his
field is crypto-zoology.
1981 *Bioscience* *31* 804/3 The International Society of Cryptozoology is
currently being formed and will hold its first meeting..at the National
Museum of Natural History in Washington.
1982 R. Westrum tr. B. Heuvelmans in *Cryptozoology* *1* 1 In the late
1950s, I coined the term ‘cryptozoology’.
1999 W Bernhardt *Dark Justice* viii. 72 Zak laughed. ‘I gather you're not
a student of cryptozoology.’
2003 *Pop. Sci.* Dec. 116/2 It put the long-standing question of the
ivory-billed woodpecker into the Yeti/Bigfoot realm of cryptozoology.
