To step back in time a few decades, it may be worth remembering that the
ARPAnet (the precursor to the Internet) was designed as a decentralized
topology to resist attack.  Where attack at that time was visualized as
nuclear strike on government hardware assets, today DDOS and cyberattacks
against the cloud are a good analogy for enterprise assets and
communications.

Why wouldn't corporate types like a decentralized topology?  They are
resisting getting nuked on a daily basis these days, it seems.  The attacks
are legion.
