I prefer to argue about obscurantism.  It has a better definition, and those same folks setting up statues in the Enlightenment in Amsterdam and such would have had much the same notion of the concept then as now, regardless of changes in media.  

Let's talk more about Obscurantism and truly old-fashioned LIBERalism.  

Liber-, liberation, free, you'd think you could use them interchangeably.  They all mean "free" in root/radical sense.  

I guess maybe it's that stubborn rhetorical distiction between "free as in freedom" or "free as in beer?"

Stubborn in the language or the listener?
