 Colleagues:****
** **
We invite you to attend the First Stanford Conference on Computational
Social Science on June 1, 2012.****
 ****
The rapid growth in large datasets and the improvement in computing power
has created an explosion of new research that will revolutionize the social
sciences. Today's computational social scientists are not only able to
re-examine their field's enduring questions in novel ways, but they are
able to ask new questions that their field was incapable of answering
before. However, increased reliance on computing and the use of large
datasets also introduces new challenges. Scholars of many different fields
have developed creative solutions to these challenges, but the fragmented
nature of their efforts means many go unrecognized in the wider community
of interested researchers.****
** **
In order to facilitate greater communication and integration of these
research efforts, the Institute for Research in the Social Sciences (IRiSS)
is pleased to host this full day event. The list of talks for the day is
attached and available
online<https://iriss.stanford.edu/css/conference-agenda-2012>
 . ****
** **
Our primary goal is to draw attention to the computational social science
research occurring on campus. We hope this conference will foster an
intellectual community where collaborations arise between students, faculty
and members of private industry who are interested in pursuing questions at
the intersection of the social sciences and computer science.****
** **
Please use this link to register to
attend<https://www.stanford.edu/group/iriss/css201206conf.fb> so
we provide enough seats and meals at the conference. Priority will be
given to Stanford faculty and graduate students. Registration will close
on May 14.****
** **
We hope you will be able to join us.****

To learn more about student training in computational social science at
Stanford, please follow this link to the certificate
program<https://iriss.stanford.edu/css/certificate>.
There, students can identify relevant coursework and faculty that are
teaching computational approaches.

In order to support collaborations in computational social science, IRiSS
will announce a seed grant competition to fund research assistants engaged
in cross-departmental collaborative projects in computational social
science. Information will be posted online and shared at the conference.
