As a relic non-profit dating to 94 before Google and Facebook that hosts
two-way online community, our biggest competition from everyday potential
users and in particular those most likely to put energy into starting a new
online neighbor forums is ...
Why not just use Facebook?
We are working up a blog post with all sorts of reasons, but in general
control and capitalism aren't going resonate with 85% of our users and the
other 15% aren't the donating types. Well, maybe some are.
Ironically, we just annouced our first forum sponsor (public radio style
donation with a link credit) in 17 years today. It was a sweet little old
lady who loves our forums and donated $100. I figure if we can't soon
generate $10 or even $1 a year from each of our 20,000 users on average, we
aren't giving them real value.
Anyway, I am very interested in people's ideas on how to generate revenue
to support inclusion, volunteer coordination, etc. that isn't a sell-out or
isn't a grant that is ongoing and sustainable in nature. Suggestions?
Bake sale anyone. :-)
