The problem with self hosted services that only your group uses is
obviously that it is very easy to identify you as a member of that
group. The same argument goes for riseup and other "activist only"
providers. Virtual servers rarely support disk crypto, and even if, the
encryption keys (and everything else) can easily be read out by the
provider of the virtual server without you noticing.
One feature of a "privacy aware" mail provider would at least be to
remove the user IP from the mail header. I am not sure if they still do,
but Gmail did not put the users IP in mails sent through their web
interface.
