That's surprising, because my understanding is that China blocks
host:port combinations (or occasionally entire hosts/netblocks),
but does not do deep packet inspection to ban particular protocols.
If you can find a bridge that they have not blocked explicitly, it
should work.

I think you just need to try more bridges.  You can try preferring
bridges on port 443 (SSL) to get around a potential block of
unfamiliar ports.

(It could also be possible that you're experiencing a very strict
local network firewall, rather than The Great Firewall.)
