I can't reply to everyone's very interesting and thoughtful comments;
today is a busy day.

On the question, how can personal servers deal with network
non-neutralities, the answer is by tunneling among themselves.  So Bob
and Carol and Ted and Alice live in different places, maybe different
countries, and have different upstream connectivity providers.  If
Bob's Freedom Box notices that he can't connect to port X at address
Y, the box opens a tunnel to Carol's box, through the encrypted
"route" they share, and asks Carol's box to proxy the traffic.  If
Carol's can't do it, maybe Ted's can.  Alice's freedom box, which is
located inside a country with a national firewall, uses Bob, Carol,
Ted, and a hundred more of her friends abroad to lift her over the
national firewall many times a day.

I'm probably not the only person who uses a personal VPN to achieve
this result already, in traveling around the world and for other
reasons.  The FB software stack doesn't have to do anything I and
others aren't already doing: it just has to do it in ways that are
simple and even fun for laypeople to set up and use.

People have asked how FBs could be useful in situations where central
authority has closed the net.  That depends--as I said in the Brussels
speech from which the NYTimes article was drawn--on whether we can
reactivate the Free World's experiments with mesh networking for the
masses, which have been more or less in abeyance since our noble
failure with OLPC.

      I can't for the life of me figure out how this would work.  Do
      you have any more information?  It states that it is a small
      (deck of cards sized) linux based server but these already exist
      (in fact I worked with one around 2003). I don't see how this
      would circumvent traditional ISPs unless there was an entirely
      different network being introduced (e.g. mesh networking via
      RF).
