Oh, and as for methodology, this paper is quite general and pretty
up-to-date: https://freenetproject.org/papers/freenet-0.7.5-paper.pdf
On the more theoretical side, Oskar Sandberg's PhD thesis covers our
routing model: https://freenetproject.org/papers/lic.pdf (it's a fairly
easy read despite being from more of a mathematical than a compsci
perspective).
I'm assuming here that you're asking about Freenet, rather than Tahrir.
Oskar's thesis is also relevant to Tahrir though, as it will also rely on
the neighbor selection heuristic, and the distributed routing approach (for
"darknet" functionality, and ad-hoc routing).
