GNI Seeks Policy and Communications Director Posted: Jul 19, 2011
One year contract. Based in Washington DC, with domestic and
international travel.
The Global Network Initiative (GNI) is a multi-stakeholder initiative
focused on protecting and advancing freedom of expression and privacy
in the Information and Communications Technology (ICT) sector.
Companies, civil society organizations (including human rights and
press freedom groups) investors and academics are members of and
actively engaged in the initiative.
The central pillars and key activities of the GNI include:
A framework for action rooted in international human rights standards
and centered on high level Principles and Implementation Guidelines.
This framework is designed to help companies make responsible and
informed decisions regarding online privacy and expression
An independent accountability mechanism focused on the implementation
of the GNI Principles and Implementations Guidelines by member
companies. This includes public reporting and internal dialogue
regarding implementation challenges
Board committees and collaborative workstreams focused on developing
and strengthening GNI’s approach to shared learning and policy
engagement, outreach and communications, governance and
accountability, and other issues
Shared learning opportunities with both internal and external
participants, designed to develop resources, strategies and other
mechanisms to respond to complex and emerging issues in this space
Engagement with policymakers and other key stakeholders around the world
Position: In this newly created position, the primary responsibilities
of the Policy and Communications Director would be to:
Formulate and articulate GNI’s policy positions in collaboration with
the Executive Director and Board committees
Draft policy papers, reports, consultation responses and other pieces
on the Internet and freedom of expression and privacy, including
leading the creation of GNI’s annual report
Grow and manage GNI’s presence through varied communications
activities, channels and venues, including development and
coordination of GNI’s online presence, and the organization of
meetings, conferences, learning calls and other events
Conduct research and policy analysis on issues relating to freedom of
expression and privacy online
Facilitate the work of the Board and Board committees on policy,
learning, outreach and communications
Qualifications: This position is applicable for people with at least 5
years of relevant experience. An ideal candidate would demonstrate the
following:
Experience in internet/technology policy, human rights, and/or media
policy
Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Comfort in multi-stakeholder settings working with diverse
constituencies
Nuanced understanding of and engagement in the new and social media
space, including content development
Exceptional planning and organizational skills
Attention to detail, resourcefulness, and creativity
Self-motivation, personal accountability, and team-orientation
Graduate degree in a relevant field and interest in public policy
related to human rights, business, and technology
ORGANIZATION: GNI is a newly incorporated non-profit organization and
the position will require initiative, energy and comfort with a high
degree of dynamism, autonomy and uncertainty.
COMPENSATION: Salary is commensurate with experience. GNI provides a
benefits package that includes health care and dental coverage, paid
vacation, sick days and parental leave.
