Can you provide a link to which project you are referring to?
Unfortunately many mesh projects have similar names. :)

I'm involved with the serval and villagetelco projects which are on the
forefront of mesh networking without any centralized
infrastructure.

OpenMesh requires a dash board for setup. VillageTelco has a dashboard
that can be run locally (and isn't require in any
way, shape or form).

I have used the OpenMesh system, as well as Meraki. They are very similar.

Yes. Mesh networking got a lot of attention at that point. 
Unfortunately it didn't seem to manifest into any real contributions to
the various
projects. Those of us who have been working on VillageTelco just kept
right on trucking.

I feel they are moving in the right direction. Taking meshes from "early
adopter" to "mission critical support system for activists on the
ground". They are looking at OLSR which seems less popular then BATMAN.
The two mesh camps seem to have a certain amount of bickering going on.
It's unfortunate. BATMAN does have the lions share of attention though.
