Call for Applications: Senior Researcher
Position Summary
The Citizen Lab is an interdisciplinary laboratory based at the Munk
School of Global Affairs at the University of Toronto, Canada focusing
on advanced research and development at the intersection of digital
media, global security, and human rights. Our mission is to undertake
advanced research and engage in development that monitors, analyses,
and impacts the exercise of political power in cyberspace. We
undertake this mission through collaborative partnerships with leading
edge research centers, organizations, and individuals around the
world, and through a pioneering “fusion” methodology that combines
technical reconnaissance, field investigations, and data mining,
analysis, and visualization. The Citizen Lab’s ongoing research
network includes the Information Warfare Monitor, and the OpenNet
Initiative.
Under the supervision of the Director of the Citizen Lab the Senior
Researcher will coordinate research projects and undertake scholarly
work on the socio-political dimensions of information controls. This
research area will include but not be limited to the following topics:
Internet censorship, mobile technologies, and monitoring the use and
control of information communication technologies during elections and
other major political events.
This opening is for a full-time position based out of the Munk School
of Global Affairs, University of Toronto.
Primary Responsibilities
-Coordinate major research projects and multidisciplinary teams
-Contribute to ongoing collaborative and independent research with the
goal of publication
-Ensure projects and deliverables are executed in organized and timely
manner
-Bring fresh perspectives, diligence, and creativity to the Citizen Lab
Education
Minimum M.A. degree (Phd preferred) in Political Science,
International Relations, Sociology, or related discipline.
Experience and Skill Requirements
- Minimum 5 years related experience.
- Advanced proficiency in social science research methods
(qualitative / quantitative)
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
- Demonstrated research excellence with strong record of publications
in related research areas
- Demonstrated ability to lead research teams in challenging
environments under tight deadlines
Additional Assets
- Research interests and experience in socio-political impacts of
information communications technology
- Field research experience in countries in the Middle East / North
Africa, Asia, or Common Wealth of Independent States
- Language skills in Mandarin, Russian, or Farsi
- Experience in election monitoring projects
