Well, I'm not sure that's true. We went through a phase of big
corporations before the current one. Think of the various East Indies
companies and the horrible stuff they managed to propogate. Currently
we have big evil corporations doing all sorts of evil things to
individuals and groups, but it's at least more subtle and far less
bloody than wholesale, unapologetic annexation of entire subcontinents
to our empire.
The US never had an East Indies company, but all of the European ones
were seriously chopped down to bits right around the same time US
corporations started using the 14th Amendment to work their "magic."
