Hi,
My name is Christine Rosakranse and I will be starting in the Communications
Department this coming Autumn and I would like to start a colloquium series
with the intention of creating a dynamic community around augmenting
compassion via interactive digital media. Ideally, this would take on
approaches from multiple disciplines. So I am looking for anyone interested
in being part of the leadership team (as an Interdisciplinary Liaison,
Artist/Engineer Session Coordinator, or Web Development Guru). I am also
looking to start creating a list of those that would be interested in
attending such a series. I am attaching the current proposal for your
perusal. Please let me know by March 10th if this is of interest to you.
Please feel free to forward this to anyone you think might also wish to be a
part of this program.

About:
This project involves a series of colloquia designed to inspire and further
research into the area of compassion augmentation via interactive digital
media. This presents an opportunity to define a scientifically meaningful
vocabulary that clarifies the relationship between emotion, prosocial
behavior and interactive media and to create a dynamic knowledge base that
delves into this complex and underexplored area. Each colloquium will
consist of two parts. The first part will involve students from varied
disciplines presenting a project that they have created to augment
compassion. The topic of compassion augmentation is relevant to so many
different disciplines and issues but now “owned” by any particular
discipline—neuroscience, human-computer interaction, computer science,
digital art, psychology —and particular instantiations are an ideal starting
point for developing fundamental questions and research agendas. To
facilitate these developments, the second part of the colloquium will allow
members of the Stanford community, drawing on diverse disciplines, to
discuss the work from a variety of perspectives. With this structure in
place, we will actively encourage interdisciplinary cooperation towards the
development of a shared conceptual framework. Plans for outreach and
publicity include developing an information portal, using the latest
insights into supporting compassionate interactions, at which captures of
the projects, the discussion, and support for effective continued discourse
within the Stanford community will be facilitated. An e-mail list, composed
during this upcoming Summer quarter through researching the possible
interested parties on campus, will also be maintained, specific to the
Stanford community.
