  The Internet, mobile phones, applications, and web 2.0 have revolutionized
the non-profit sector. Non-profits have sprung up around the innovative use
of technology to further a social goal, and long-established NGOs are also
beginning to integrate technology into their existing operations. Technology
has made person-to-person micro-lending possible, facilitated rapid disaster
response by connecting victims and relief workers through SMS, and has the
potential to positively impact healthcare, education, volunteerism,
environmental protection, democracy and development in the US and abroad.
This course will introduce the tech aspect of non-profits to socially-minded
techies and technologically-inclined fuzzies. The class will feature weekly
 guest speakers from tech NGOs like InSTEDD, Kiva.org, FrontlineSMS.
Students will explore how social
innovators are using technology to further their social goals, and how
Silicon Valley companies are developing specific software with social
purposes and how commercial software can be leveraged for the social good.
