TITLE: "HOW INDIVIDUALS CONSTRUE SOCIAL CONTEXT IN FUZZY WORK ENVIRONMENTS"
** **(Paper Attached)
**Time and Location:*
Monday, February 9, 12:00-1:30 pm
Terman 217
*Abstract:*
How do individuals define social context in situations where they cannot
know everyone? This has always been important, but it's even more important
as traditional organizational boundaries fray. Individuals receive critical
information from a wide assortment of others and through different media,
over large geographic distances, and through telecommuting or boundaryless
careers—fuzzy social contexts that are not defined by work groups, divisions
or organizations. I present highlights of a study on organizational
reference groups. The discussion will focus on how this individual-level
view of social context might be further developed.
*Biography:*
Barbara S. Lawrence is Professor of Human Resources and Organizational
Behavior at the Anderson Graduate School of Management at UCLA, where she
has been a member of the faculty since 1983. She received her Ph.D. from
the Sloan School of Management at the Massachusetts Institute of
Technology. Her work focuses on the impact of social context on
individuals. This has included research on norms, careers and
organizational demography. A current project involves an agent-based
simulation that examines the independent effects of individual perceptions
and social structure on mobility. She received the 1998 Outstanding
Publication in Organizational Behavior Award from the Organizational
Behavior Division of the Academy of Management. In 1999 her work with
co-authors in Spain and the United States received the Best Paper Award of
the First International Conference of the Iberoamerican Academy of
Management. For more information on Dr. Lawrence, please visit her website
