[liberationtech] Work with Virtual Tribunal Project

I have been working with a group from Berkeley's Human Rights Center
who are developing a project called the Virtual Tribunal, working
closely with the court in Cambodia that is prosecuting war crimes by
the Khmer Rouge. See http://hrc.berkeley.edu/cambodia.html

The project is led by Prof. David Cohen, who is a lawyer and has been
engaged with the international criminal courts, such as the Hague,
Cambodia and Indonesia. The project has collected court documents,
including video, sound and transcripts for some of the important
proceedings. They are creating an on-line (web-accessible) system to
query the data, including references to people, places, and events,
and integrating the transcripts and their videos.  It would be used by
legal experts and scholars, teachers of international human rights,
and people in the country, including students. The project also
includes work with groups in Oslo and Munich.

We are looking for a student who would be responsible for the core
architecture and interface(s) for the system.  We have laid some
groundwork and have been developing the software for alignment of
transcripts and videos, and now want to be able to start building and
testing prototypes.  This would begin Winter Quarter, and could
provide RA funding.  Long-term funding hasn't yet been established but
is quite likely, and the project will be under development for at
least a year. If successful it may be applied in other countries and
venues with human rights tribunals.

We're looking for someone with experience in putting together complex
web systems, both back-end and frontend.  In general we expect the
system to make use of open-source software, and details are still
being worked out.
