1. June 30: Deadline to Submit your Global Gathering App & Proposals

The hard deadline to submit your application for the Global Gathering is
June 30. If you need to bring a partner or spouse to the GG to support
childcare, they must also submit an application before this date — do
not run the risk that their application is not approved because it was
not submitted in time.

Reviewing and vetting applications to ensure the safety and security of
the GG is a time-consuming task. We will not be extending the deadline
as we have done in previous years. If you want to support our security
and safety efforts, encourage your friends and colleagues to apply soon!

2. Pre-Event Mental Health Workshops for GG Participants

We are offering four mental health online workshops pre-event to all
registered Global Gathering participants, with the first one taking
place on May 29. Topics range from understanding burnout and your
nervous system, to best practices when confronting a crisis. If you have
already applied and have been approved for attendance, you should have
received a form with the workshop details, allowing you to RSVP.. Want
to take advantage of this opportunity? Apply to join the GG before June
30, the final day to submit your application (and program proposals).

7. New Guide: Tackling Arbitrary Digital Surveillance in the Americas

EFF has launched a new guide, which compiles privacy, data protection,
and access to information guarantees established within the
Inter-American Human Rights System to provide concrete, actionable
guidance to governments in the Americas to curb the vicious cycle of
state digital surveillance abuses. It outlines the safeguards and
institutional measures necessary to protect individuals and details
rules, parameters, and standards to overcome current pernicious
practices and trends. The great majority of states in Latin America have
ratified the American Convention on Human Rights. As such, the
parameters and rules in the new guide stem directly from their
obligations before international human rights law.

8. Toolkit on Digital Security and Detecting Disinformation for Women’s
Rights and Civil Society Organisations in Eastern Neighbourhood Countries

Produced by EU4Gender Equality Reform Helpdesk Project, this new toolkit
provides women’s rights organisations and other civil society
organisations (CSOs) in Eastern Neighbourhood (EN) countries with
practical tools to detect and defend against gendered disinformation,
while maintaining digital security in the quest to advance
gender-inclusive reforms. The toolkit is based on evidence from the EEAS
OSINT Guidelines and extensive research on identity-based
disinformation (IBD).

It states that EN countries face particular challenges from Russian
disinformation campaigns exploiting gender issues; anti-gender movements
funded by transnational networks; right-wing radical parties and
conservative movements both inside and outside EN countries; religious
organizations promoting patriarchal values; cross-border narrative
manipulation targeting European Union integration; organized
disinformation campaigns against civil society, especially those working
on peace-building, sex education and gender equality; and coordinated
attacks during elections and policy debates.

9. SuperBloom Conducting Research on Security and Privacy Tools

Using Polis, SuperBloom is exploring how people experience, evaluate,
adopt, or abandon digital security and privacy tools. Their goal is to
surface patterns, disagreements, and lived experiences that may be
missing from technical or policy-focused discussions around digital
security. They currently have 9 Polis prompts, ranging from trust and
social proof to context and resource constraints.

10. New Report: Thousands of Cases of Online Violence Against At-Risk
Communities in Pakistan

The Digital Rights Foundation has published a new report, Digital
Threats Against At-Risk Communities in Pakistan, which documents online
violence faced by communities such as women, religious minorities, and
human rights defenders, among others. The report also evaluates the
usability and effectiveness of crisis response tools recommended through
Digital Rights Foundation’s (DRF) Digital Security Helpline, which was
first established in 2016. The report states that threats seem to
concentrate on mainstream platforms with platform-specific attack
patterns. Women and trans women had elevated reports of account
compromise, blackmail/sextortion, threats, and image-based abuse,
alongside social engineering and financial fraud.

11. Iran: Stop Repression of People Seeking Internet Access

In a recent statement, ARTICLE 19 shares their deep concern about
reports that Iranians are being arrested and tortured for the use of
Starlink and circumvention tools to access the internet amid the longest
internet shutdown in Iran’s history. At least one person, Hesam
Alaeeddin, has died, reportedly beaten to death by security services
following arrest for using satellite services to access the internet.
The demand that Iranian authorities immediately restore full and
unrestricted access to the internet in the country and cease the
targeting of people exercising their rights. They also urge the
international community, governments, institutions, and the private
sector to urgently support Iranians’ rights to free expression and
access to information.

1. Google and Amnesty International Teamed Up to Make it Harder for
Spyware Vendors to Hide; Meanwhile, encryption Between Apple and Google
Messaging Starts this Week

Google has launched a feature for Android phones for dedicated forensic
logs about intrusions from sophisticated attacks like those by spyware
vendors, in what design partners at Amnesty International hailed as an
important first, and will be a major aid to digital forensic
investigations.

Intrusion Logging, a feature of Android Advanced Protection Mode, is
designed specifically to keep track of possible intrusions for forensic
purposes. All forensic logs, collected once a day by default, are
encrypted with a user-generated key before the logs are securely
archived in the user’s Google account. The logs can later be accessed
and decrypted by the user, but not by Google or any unauthorized third
parties.

https://cyberscoop.com/google-android-intrusion-logging-amnesty-spyware-detection/

Additionally, Apple and Google have led a cross-industry effort to bring
end-to-end encryption to cross-platform messaging, which begins rolling
out this week for iPhone users running iOS 26.5 with supported carriers
and Android users on the latest version of Google Messages. This means
that conversations between Android and iphone will soon be encrypted in
the default chat apps.

2. The Secret Chinese Vast Foreign Surveillance Network

A recent investigation by The Telegraph has exposed the scale of China’s
surveillance system. The report exposes a leaked Chinese security
database linked to a programme called the “Dynamic Control Platform for
Foreigners”, a system reportedly designed to monitor and track
foreigners entering or living in China.

The platform was first discovered by NetAskari, a cybersecurity group
that researches exposed databases and online security vulnerabilities.
The “Dynamic Control Platform” reportedly collects data from facial
recognition cameras, visa applications, hotel check-ins, airline
bookings, mobile phone records and even location tracking systems. The
report suggests authorities are able to monitor people’s movements,
contacts, travel history and activities almost in real time.

3. Google Is Handing More of Search Over to AI Agents

At its I/O 2026 conference, Google rolled out a sweeping expansion of
AI-powered Search, anchored by Gemini 3.5 Flash. The update also
redesigns the Search box itself, which Google called its biggest
overhaul yet. The tech giant is no longer competing solely on
information retrieval. It is repositioning Search as an active assistant
capable of monitoring the web 24/7, booking services, generating
interfaces, and maintaining workflows.

4. Cubadebate Accuses X of Censorship, Describing It as "Algorithmic
Warfare."

Cubadebate is an official Cuban digital news outlet that serves as the
primary mouthpiece for the Cuban government. Recently, they accused the
social network X of censoring institutional accounts of the regime
since March 2026, in what it describes as an "algorithmic war" driven by
the United States government. The study, conducted by the Media
Observatory of Cubadebate, claims to have analyzed over 600,000 mentions
on X of 10 government accounts, including @partidopcc, @presidenciacuba,
and @minint_cuba, between January 1 and May 13, 2026, and identified "an
abrupt, widespread, and synchronized" decline in their reach and digital
visibility.

Meanwhile, the US military has been publicly broadcasting the location
of military surveillance flights near Cuba on plane-tracking websites,
as Washington continues to exert pressure on the island's communist
leadership.

5. Russian Official Admits Completely Banning VPNs Is 'Simply Impossible'

Valery Fadeev, the head of Russia's Presidential Human Rights Council —
an advisory body that consults the Kremlin on civil liberties - has
publicly conceded that completely blocking Virtual Private Networks
(VPNs) in Russia is "simply impossible" and admitted that doing so could
catastrophically impact the country's digital infrastructure. He warned
that a blanket VPN shutdown would severely impact businesses, banks, and
"programmers who download code."

https://www.techradar.com/vpn/vpn-privacy-security/russian-official-admits-completely-banning-vpns-is-simply-impossible

In other news, the CEO of Ntech Lab, a Russian company that specializes
in facial recognition technology, shared that there are currently 15
million cameras in Russia, but only 7% of them are under smart services.”

https://www.oreanda-news.com/en/transport/the-number-of-video-surveillance-cameras-in-russia-has-been-named/article1592123/

Last year, Comparitech, a UK-based pro-consumer website, collated a
number of data resources and reports, including government reports,
police websites, and news articles, to estimate the number of CCTV
cameras in use in 150 major cities across the globe—Moscow was in the
the list of top 10 most surveilled cities.

6. EU Broadcasters Say Digital Fairness Act Should Target Big Tech, Not Them

Europe’s biggest broadcasters and media groups warned EU regulators that
a planned ‌law to curb unfair digital practices should target Big Tech,
not publishers and broadcasters already heavily regulated, citing risks
to media business models and pluralism. The Digital Fairness Act, which
the European Commission's Justice chief Michael McGrath will propose
towards the end of the year, seeks to tackle dark patterns, the
addictive design of digital products, misleading influencer marketing,
pricing practices and subscription traps, among others.

7. Greek PASOK Leader Threatens Lawsuit Against Spy Chief Over Phone
Surveillance

Main opposition PASOK leader Nikos Androulakis said he was considering
legal action to force Greece’s spy chief to divulge information on why
he was targeted in a phone surveillance scandal together with dozens of
politicians, journalists, businesspeople, military and other officials.

8. Brazil Opens Investigation on Google Over its AI’s Impact on the
Journalism Industry

The Administrative Council for Economic Defense (Cade), linked to the
Ministry of Justice in Brazil, approved the opening of an administrative
process to further investigate Google’s generative AI (Artificial
Intelligence) and its use of journalistic content to create automated
summaries for searched terms (AI Overviews), which could potentially
affect the organic traffic of journalistic platforms, their
monetization, and engagement.

9. Researcher Claims Claude Desktop Installs “Spyware” on MacOS

Security researcher Alexander Hanff wrote an article detailing how
Anthropic secretly installs spyware when you install Claude Desktop.
Users on Mastodon, Reddit, and LinkedIn are confirming the researcher’s
findings. Check out this Malware Bytes piece that delves into details of
what happens on your computer, and their analysis.

10. Federal Workers Tracked Under New Surveillance Push as Palantir
Lands $3.9 Million Government Contract

The federal government is rapidly expanding a workplace monitoring
system that is raising serious concerns among labor advocates, legal
experts, and public sector unions, as new disclosures show millions of
dollars are being directed toward technology designed to track
government employees inside their own offices.

At the center of the controversy is a growing surveillance network tied
to return to office enforcement policies that critics say could reshape
how federal workers are monitored, evaluated, and potentially reduced
across multiple agencies. Federal spending disclosures reveal that
technology firm Palantir has already received an initial $3.9 million
contract connected to this effort at the Department of Agriculture.

https://usaherald.com/federal-workers-tracked-under-new-surveillance-push-as-palantir-lands-3-9-million-government-contract

This past week, NPR did a piece exploring what we know about the US
government’s use of spyware, and what we don’t know. This follows the
first acknowledgement by the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement
agency of their growing arsenal of surveillance technology, which
includes spyware.

11. Ontario Police Are Using Spyware That Lets Them Remotely Take Over
Your Smartphone and Fighting to Keep it Secret

Ontario police forces are deploying commercial spyware that can remotely
take over a suspect’s smartphone—reading encrypted messages, activating
microphones and cameras, and logging every keystroke—and fighting to
keep nearly every detail about the technology hidden from courts,
defence lawyers, and the public. Six Ontario police services pool
resources into a little-known provincial unit called the Joint Technical
Assistance Centre (JTAC), which manages the On-Device Investigative
Tools (ODIT) program.

JTAC sources the tools from a private vendor whose identity it keeps
classified. It’s so classified that police forces must sign an agreement
committing to abandon major prosecutions rather than disclose the
vendor’s name in court—and the Crown in at least one active case may do
exactly that. Canada currently has no legislation regulating police use
of commercial spyware. In March last year, the University of Toronto’s
Citizen Lab identified “possible links” between the Ontario Provincial
Police and Paragon Solutions, an Israeli firm selling military-grade
spyware called Graphite to government clients.

1. Hackers Using AI Just Found a ‘Zero-Day.’ The Spyware Industry is
Watching

Google recently reported a pivotal moment—for the first time, hackers
used AI to discover and exploit a zero-day, the most serious type of
security flaw because it has not been detected by security companies and
has no known fix. This zero-day was particularly dangerous as it would
have bypassed two-factor authentication across Google products.
Zero-days are typically both rare and expensive, requiring skilled
talent to discover and exploit them—this development changes that. By
collapsing the cost, time, and expertise required to find and weaponize
zero-days, AI is primed to recharacterize the offensive playing field in
ways defenders are not yet equipped to match.
